You and Your Brilliance

How are you making things better around here?

I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.

We recently discussed a framework for mindset called Values - Brilliance - Purpose. Exploring these core principles can have a massive impact on how you are showing up in life every day, and the results that you are getting.

Today, we have a story from Brilliance coach Charlie Welch, on how doing this work can make a big difference - no matter the challenge you are facing…

“About 30 years ago, I volunteered for a 4 month project in the South American jungle.

Part of the project involved leading a group of young adult volunteers for 8 weeks, working directly with indigenous Amerindians. The group was full of people from vastly different backgrounds, who all seemed to have little in common with each other beyond an interest in this project.

I was fascinated by this, and by the question of how we were all going to work together. So I asked each of them. ‘Why did you want to sign up for this?’

One person said he liked the adventure of it, as part of the journey required us to climb mountains. Another said she wanted to experience a different culture and really get to know the Amerindians, what they did and what their experiences were like. There was one young man who had simply never left his hometown, and had saved every penny from his job to get away and do something different.

Each of them had a different interest drawing them together, but when I asked, they were all clear on what this meant to them and what they wanted to get out of it.

This became crucial when, a few days into the expedition, two members of the group came down with tropical foot rot. Halfway up the mountain, we had to adapt to this sudden challenge and come together as a group to get through it. The volunteer who wanted to climb the mountain carried a heavy pack for another member of the group. When we got to the village, the volunteer who was interested in the culture took charge of the sessions we ran with the indigenous children. And on and on this went.

By being clear on what was important to them, what they had to offer and what they wanted to do, every member of the group came together and achieved the common goal in the face of adversity.”

This is just one example of what happens when you are clear about your Values, Brilliance, and Purpose. What does that mean for you?

Ask yourself and the people you trust, and see what you discover about yourself.

Good luck with your exploration.
